Walk-able Lake Access Point for SouthEast Lake Steilacoom Neighborhoods - Lakewood, WA

Neighborhood Equity in Local Lake Access: The City Council of Lakewood is set to consider testimony on lake access points.  The Parks Advisory Committee and city staff have recommended a plan which does not take advantage of the potential that is available to provide inclusive and equitable local access for all the neighborhoods around our beautiful lakes.  Our concern is in special regard to Steilacoom Lake.  Six street ends on the lake have been under consideration...only half, three out of the six, have been recommended for local access.

The inequity is geographical, the three recommended sites are all on the west and north ends of the lake, they  provide local and walk-able access for only select neighborhood areas surrounding Steilacoom Lake.   These three recommended sites provide ready access for these residents within 3,500 feet or less.   Via the advisory recommendations, it is the Southeast side which has been denied a similar and equitable lake access point.  Even though two, almost three of the six street ends under consideration were located in the Southeast side of the lake, all of those site have been recommended for no improvement, sale or lease.

This fact alone creates a great inequity when it comes to local lake access points for neighborhoods surrounding Steilacoom Lake.

Under the current recommendations, the SouthEast side neighborhoods, unlike their counter parts, will not have a similar local access point to the lake via public property.  This inequity is a problem which has a solution.  We request that where possible the City Council of Lakewood forgo the advisory recommendations and consider more equitable distribution of lake access points, especially around Steilacoom Lake with specific consideration to providing the Southeastern Neighborhoods around Steilacoom Lake with an equitable and local lake access point.

Summary: This proposal seeks to promote lake access for all Lakewood citizens and especially the many residents of homes bordering the southeast side of Lake Steilacoom.  The proposed public access point is located on at the western terminus of 100th Street SW (See Map).  This location is in the public right-of-way on 100th Street and offers easy pedestrian and non-motorized access to the lake.  It is also central to several neighborhood residences that are located between Ponce De Leon Creek and Mt. Tacoma Drive.  Mindful of lakefront properties owners at the location, the proposal suggest no parking areas and limiting access-use to pedestrian and non-motorized traffic only.  Details and photos below...
