Walk-able Lake Access Point for SouthEast Lake Steilacoom Neighborhoods - Lakewood, WA

Neighborhood Equity in Local Lake Access: One of the unique characteristics of Lakewood is of course our beautiful lakes, unfortunately except for a relative few public parks - most citizens do not have local and ready access to enjoy our lake views and waterfronts.  Fortunately opportunity lies where several public street-ends terminate at our lake waterfronts.  It seems to make the most sense to make these street ends more locally accessible for people that live in the neighborhoods and those willing to walk or ride bikes to reach the lake access points.  Primarily due to associated costs and congestion no accommodation for vehicles are suggested.

----------------------------------------------

Over a year ago: the City Council took testimony on lake access points.  The presentation came from the Parks Advisory Committee and city staff.  It recommended a plan which in our opinion does not take advantage of the potential that is available to provide equitable local access for ALL neighborhoods surrounding our beautiful lakes.  One of our specific concerns regards the eastern side of Steilacoom Lake.  Six street ends on the lake have been under consideration...only half, three out of the six, have been recommended for local access.

The inequity in the current plan is geographical, the three recommended sites are all on the western and far north ends of the lake.  These sites provide ready access to those area residents.   Via the advisory recommendations, it is the eastside neighborhoods especially toward the south which has been denied a similar lake access point within a relatively short distance.  In fact, under the selection criteria use all the sites that would made access points for these neighborhoods have been recommended for no improvements, sale or lease.

This fact alone creates a great inequity when it comes to local lake access points for neighborhoods surrounding Steilacoom Lake.  This inequity is a problem which has a solution.  We request that where possible the City Council of Lakewood forgo the advisory recommendations, review and revise the selection criteria and consider as a priority the  equitable distribution of lake access points, especially around Steilacoom Lake.

Summary: This proposal seeks to promote lake access for all Lakewood citizens and especially the many residents of homes bordering the southeast side of Lake Steilacoom.  The proposed public access point is located on at the western terminus of 100th Street SW (See Map).  This location is in the public right-of-way on 100th Street and offers easy pedestrian and non-motorized access to the lake.  It is also central to several neighborhood residences that are located between Ponce De Leon Creek and Mt. Tacoma Drive.  Mindful of lakefront properties owners at the location, the proposal suggests no-parking areas and limiting access-use to pedestrian and non-motorized traffic only.  Details and photos below...
